Reminders

Some things to remember:

*We are here for every student. The beautiful thing about Park is that we have much higher numbers of non-traditional students and international students. This means that you will encounter people from all walks of life, all kinds of different cultures, and a large range of ages. It is important to always operate in an accepting and welcoming manner. Always assume positive intent. The role of the library is to provide access whenever possible.

*Please get up from the desk and walk around every hour. This is to ensure that we’re aware of anything that might need our attention, and also to present that we’re present and ready to help students/patrons.

*It’s always a good idea to check that we have notecards for the suggestion box, that the printer has paper, that the tables are clean and ready to be used, etc.

*Try to greet every new student who comes in to the library. A smile and a ‘good morning’ or ‘welcome in’ or a head nod is fine. Some people will want your help but will be nervous to ask. Little things like smiling helps break that initial barrier of nervousness and makes it possible for you to help them.

At Open

  • Turn on all the lights in the reading rooms (upstairs and downstairs, and in the gallery area)
  • Put trash-cans back in their place (if maintenance has moved them)
  • Unlock the Huddle rooms and the Learning Lab
  • Raise the window shades (upstairs and downstairs, and in the learning lab)
  • Make sure the learning lab computer is turned on.
  • Straighten chairs, make sure that all tables are wiped down (this should be done at close, but there are a lot of tables, and sometimes a few get missed)

Durng Midday

  • Wipe down any empty tables that might need it
  • Check that there are note cards and pens for the suggestion box by popular reading
  • Make sure all computers and Chromebook are plugged in to charge in the laptop carts
  • Put in IT tickets for any returned laptops (this is not necessary for Chromebooks)
  • Make sure that chargers are tidy, and not knotted up in their box
  • Check that the printer isn’t out of paper, refill if necessary (an alert will be up on the screen, you don’t have to open the drum to check)
  • Double check that cleaning supplies is stocked. If not, asked Veronica to order more.

At Close

  • Make sure the laptop carts are locked
  • Check that all rooms are empty, and politely let any lingering students know that the library is closing.
  • Wipe down all tables and straighten chairs in upstairs and downstairs reading rooms
  • Turn off the lights in the gallery, reading rooms, and study rooms, and lower the shades.
  • Make sure any returned books are shelved properly
  • Make sure the information desk is tidy and clear of any trash or clutter. If any notes have been left unresolved, send them in a message to Rose on slack.
  • Make sure you have everything with you before leaving, and check that the door locks on your way out. (The doors are on a timer and will lock right at close. If they don’t, call campus safety to let them know). It’s a good idea to have this number saved in your phone just in case.
