Library Student Assistant Job Description

Job Title: Library Student Assistant

Direct Supervisor: Anne Accardi, Digital Initiatives & Resources Librarian

Function: Under the supervision of the direct supervisor and faculty librarians, the Library Student Assistant will assist library staff in serving all Park University patrons.

Attitude: All students are to display an attitude toward work which fosters a supportive work atmosphere; treat others with courtesy; present, accept, and act upon constructive suggestions and criticism; able to prioritize and answer simultaneous requests for assistance.

Duties: Students will be regularly responsible for the following duties.

  1. Patron Services – Assists patrons with basic research, technology, and directional questions received in-person, over the telephone, via email, or online chat. Refers patrons to appropriate personnel as needed. Assists patrons with printing materials and laptop checkout kiosk.

  2. Library Materials – Circulates library materials. May retrieve and/or shelve items from the Library Attic.  May assist with shifting and stacks maintenance projects in the Library Attic. Will accurately reshelf circulating collection materials located on the first and second floor of Norrington.

  3. Facilities Management – Helps maintain a functional, clean, and safe learning environment; duties include repositioning movable furniture, performing minor cleaning tasks, and ensuring public spaces are adequately stocked with supplies. Ensures university policies for public spaces are followed. May perform opening and/or closing procedures for the Norrington Center.

  4. Other Duties – May assist with library programs, events and displays. May be asked to create flyers, social media posts, or other promotional materials. Completes other library-related duties as assigned.

Attributes Needed: Responsibility, dependability, accuracy, attention to detail, courteous manner, willingness to ask questions and seek help, ability to interact and converse with patrons.

  • Strong customer service skills

  • Detail-oriented, able to prioritize and answer simultaneous requests for assistance.

  • Basic proficiency in word processing and related software. Functional typing skills.

  • Near-native fluency in English.

  • Ability to sit at the Information Desk for an extended period of time.

  • Ability to shelve books with training.

Library Work Hours: Monday-Thursday: 8:00am-9:00pm, Friday: 8:00am-4:30pm

Saturday: 10:00am-4:00pm, Sunday: 4:00pm-9:00pm
