CS 300: Research Topic Selection

This guide is designed to help students complete research-based assignments for CS 300.

Discerning the Right Topic

Infographic: Selecting a Research Topic. Selecting the right topic can help you enjoy the research process! Interest: It is MUCH easier to research and write about something that is interesting to you than something you care nothing about. One factor in picking a topic should be your own interest level. Scope: Consider the scope of your assignment: your topic should be something that you can answer in the suggested or required length. You can broaden or narrow your topic to fit the assignment by considering how concise or broadly you approach it. Initial Searching: Spend time doing some initial searches to see what other sources have to say about your topic to help you add specificity. You can also use those searches to confirm your research topic is viable with current research. ‘W’ Questions: According to M.I.T Libraries, you should consider these questions about your topic: Who might spend time studying, researching, or writing about this topic? What major questions exist about this topic? Where is your topic important? When is/was the topic important? Why does this topic interest you?
